This was written in the
midst of a situation affecting close friends. It was written very quickly one evening when I was meant to
be rehearsing for a gig, but I’d just taken a phone call and was given
pause. I’d written the music some
months before, but that night it came back to me. I suppose it was my way of processing what was going
on.
It’s a song that
acknowledges pain and creates space to be real. It helps me mourn with someone who is mourning, and to use
it as a prayer. But hopefully it
also communicates care. It’s a
song with a pastoral purpose. It
could be used as one of those songs that gets occasional and very specific use
in a gathered context for a particular purpose. Chances are that it will be relevant to someone reading
this: I hope it provides a safe space for you, and points you to connect with
good friends who can hold your heart until the bruising’s gone.

He’s broken your
heart
He’s taken your
breath away
I know the pain
keep crashing like the waves
Please don’t feel that you’re alone
We’ll hold your heart for you
Until the bruising’s gone
The sea keeps on
calling
A lonely ocean
Tomorrow’s dreams have been cast down deep
Tomorrow’s dreams have been cast down deep
